How many times have you been told, “You look great” and feel a smile making its way onto your face only to halt mid-grin when you catch the caveat “for your age…” thrown in at the end? Wait, what is that supposed to mean?! According to a recent study, 82% of women have heard that exact “compliment” within the past year and the majority of them would prefer to have no compliment at all than one with a qualifier. Let’s look at some other significant findings within this study:
- 87% of women agree that society expects women to act their age, but look younger
- 78% of women agree that we are criticised for our looks more as we age, while men are actually complimented more on their looks as they grow older.
- More than 60% of women agree they have altered their behaviors after being told their actions weren’t age appropriate (here’s looking at you What Not to Wear After 40 lists!)
- Television & Movies are the culprits behind the biggest pressure to look younger, with other women being a close second.
Thankfully 88% of women who participated in the study refuse to conform to societal standards set for women their age.
I am all for embracing growing older gracefully and I like trying different products to keep my skin healthy and hydrated along the way. I have been using ROC Retinol Correxion Max Daily Hydration Creme for a few weeks now and I really like the thick and creamy formula. I struggle with dry and tight skin all year round, but especially in the winter months. My skin feels so smooth and more supple. This hydration creme offers a 24-hour moisturizing formula to reduce fine lines and dark spots. While I only have a few fine lines, I do feel like they are less pronounced and my skin looks brighter. I am hoping with continued use I will see my dark spots fade more.
Thank you so much to ROC for performing the “For Your Age” study and bringing attention to this form of ageism. We should all lift one another up and spread the word about flipping the age script by sharing examples using the #ForYourAge on our social media. Let someone know you think they look great… period!
